A nice example of the kind of charming small houses that were built throughout East Durham in the early 20th century - one which, in this case, retains most of its detail intact. Note the rubble stone foundation, common in foundations and retaining walls throughout East Durham.

The house appears to have been rental through the 1920s-1930s, but was the long-term residence of Charles Smith from the 1940s through at least the 1960s.

(Below in italics is from the 2004 National Register listing; not verified for accuracy by this author.)

Pyramidal cottage with front and side gabled wings, weatherboard, 1-over-1 sash windows, and a front door with sidelights. The wraparound porch has original classical posts. The gable ends of the wings have decorative windows. 1925 CD, 1937 SM.
