1702 Angier Avenue, 1980

1702 Angier Avenue was built in the first decade of the 20th century, sometime after 1905, by James B. Vaughan, a master mechanic at the Durham Hosiery Mill and his wife Adella. The historic inventory describes the architecture of the house thusly (since we're using words like "enframe"):

The irregular boxey massing and the combination of ornamental millwork with neoclassical elements is characteristic of substantial houses built in Durham early in the 20th century. Molded box cornices with returns enframe the decoratively shingled gables; bargeboard spandrels and turned balusters decorate the small recessed balcony above the main entrance. The meandering [really?] wraparound front porch is supported by Tuscan columns.

Adella Vaughan operated a small grocery near the house - this was gone by the 1920s. James Vaughan died 03.21.1913 at age 44. One of the Vaughan's children, Henrietta, married Charles Benjamin Morris, who had grown up across the [South Plum] street, soon after his return from World War I. The couple moved into 1702 Angier Avenue soon after their marriage in the early 1920s, and continued to live in the house long after Mrs. Vaughan's death on 05.31.29.

1928: Charles B Morris, Mrs. Adella M Vaughan, HB Conklin
1934: CB Morris, Lonnie Markham
1940: CB Morris, Vance Sykes
1945: CB Morris

Charles Morris died 10.07.1949, but Henrietta continued to live in the house another 17 years.

1950: Henrietta Morris
1957: Mrs. Hazel Kelly
1960: Henrietta Morris; Hester, Owen O.; Brady, William S.

Henrietta Morris died 07.08.1966

The porch railings have GOT to go. Otherwise, pretty nice house. Would love to see a pre-1980 photo.

Tax records show that it was purchased in 2006 for $1000. Sits on over 1/3 acre - great house.
