Across the street from where this picture was taken there was a resturant called Charles Dunham's. Man I miss it soooo much.
Charlie Dunham's was the site of the former Royal Ice Cream Parlor, site of a very early anti-segregation protest. The building was demolished by Union Missionary Baptist Church in 2006 prior to building the school that currently sits on the site. I argued at the time that I could think of no better history classroom than to retain the building as part of the school; it remains depressing to see that the building footprint is landscaping + driveway for the school - i.e. it could still sit on the site without disturbing the current school buildings.
This has to be the best example yet of your before and after picture series...everything in the first picture from 1968 that is exciting, culturally or historically signficant, and visually appealing is absolutely gone in the second picture from 2010. So depressing, amazing there is enough that is old and visually appealing in Durham today to make it the cool place it is.
Love that two story gas station!
And God said, go forth and pave all of the land...
