Rumored to be the half-brother of Julian Carr, John O'Daniel was enslaved by the Carr family prior to the Civil War, and continued to work for the family after the war. He became Carr's 'right-hand man' in recruiting African-American workers to the Durham Hosiery Mill No. 2.
Carr named the John O'Daniel Hosiery Mill in his honor after his death.
