Just wondering if this building was originally the home of AJ. (Andrew Jackson) Draughon who was founder of Merchant's Bank. This is the address listed in his obituary in 1938, but doesn't look like a "house". Estelle Clark

Estelle- It seems that this address is correct, but the current building is not that old, and was built around 1950 according to county tax records. Old city directories confirm that the original home was likely demolished around the same time, as it changes from residential listings to commercial listings for this address. I show AJ working at Draughan-Ferrell, a produce company, around 1913. There were also other Draughan family members living at 1013 West Main Street according to records. By the 1920s I show AJ then working in real estate. Not much to go by though as far as the original house.

This building i believe was the office of Claude N. May who was thought to be the best painting business in Durham. Claude N May was the company that always painted when my Grandfather Wyche Horton decided to freshen up Belk Leggett. Claude N. May was a close friend of my Grandfather and i met him many times in my youth.
