This Colonial was the home of Jesse Henderson and his wife Gladys who owned Henderson's Soda Shop (located at 111 N. Market Street).  The house just SCREAMS soda shop owner to me. Or ice cream parlour owner. 

(Below in italics is from the 2004 East Durham National Register listing; not verified for accuracy by this author.)

Jesse Henderson House. 1 1/2-story side-gable Colonial Revival-style house with 6- over-6 sash windows and 4 gabled dormers. The entrance has a brick stoop with metal railing. 1940-1945 CDs: Jesse Henderson owner/occupant (Henderson's Soda Shop). Here's the soda shop listed in the city directory's listings of restaurants in Durham in 1951:
