OpenDurham.org is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of our community. Run by our parent nonprofit, Preservation Durham, the site requires routine maintence and upgrades. We do not ask for support often, but today, we're asking you to chip in to help us reach our goal of raising $7,500 for annual maintenance by the end of the year. Your support allows us to maintain this valuable resource, expand our archives, and keep the history of Durham accessible to everyone.

Maxwell's was a bar that occupied the same building that Devines now occupies. if I remember correctly, prior to being Maxwell's it was called Uptown Main Street, then Maxwell's, then Chevy '47, then Devine's. I hoisted a glass or two in there over the years.

And I wouldn't bet the farm, but I believe that Devine's was the University Grill (aka UG!) in the mid to late '60's.

And that "Alivia's" was my aunt and uncle's old print shop, Economy Copy Center, early 1980s. The recession pretty much did them in, but I spent a lot of time hanging out there. Got my first car repaired at that body shop ... we replaced numerous broken plate glass windows from drunken Devines customers driving into the print shop lobby. It got wild at night. One night while sweeping the parking lot (now an outdoor seating area), a shirtless and shoeless guy ran by me with a gun, had just robbed patrons of the Duke hangout up the street by Subway.
