New Morning Construction was founded in 1976 by husband and wife team Richard and Lonna Harkrader. The Harkraders built their first home together on Shepherd Street, and went on to build numerous single family and multi family homes in Durham, mostly in the Morehead Hill neighborhood. The homes are bulit using a passive solar design, with numerous windows on the south side of the buildings, fewer windows on the north, east and west sides, and generally with brick floors, which serve as a heat sink.
New Morning Construction employed a loyal crew of carpenters. The company operated for fifteen years and ceased constructing homes in 1990. The Harkraders continued to manage the multi family homes through New Morning Realty through around 2000, when many of the buildings were sold to the Durham Land Trust.
